MISA Mozambique is concerned about the disappearance of Arlindo Chissale, a journalist for the online portal "Pinnacle News", who has been away from his family since January 7, 2025.
What is known so far is that Chissale left his home in Pemba, in Cabo Delgado province, bound for Nacala in Nampula, but never reached his destination.
The family filed a missing person's report on January 16, and so far, the journalist's situation remains unknown.
According to what MISA-Mozambique has learned from his brother Macário Chissale, the situation of Arlindo Chissale's disappearance still lacks concrete information to clarify what has happened, given that in recent days there have been reports on social media that he has physically disappeared, but without any evidence.
In this regard, MISA-Mozambique is calling on the competent authorities to use all available means to locate the journalist and restore him to freedom if he has been the victim of any kind of kidnapping or arbitrary detention.
MISA Mozambique stresses that press freedom and the safety of media professionals are fundamental pillars for democracy and the rule of law.
Any threat or violation of these principles is unacceptable and goes against the principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Mozambique, particularly with regard to freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
MISA Mozambique reaffirms its commitment to defending the rights of communication professionals and will continue to follow the case closely, pressing for concrete measures to be taken until this case is properly clarified
