MINEDH lança projecto “Dicionário do Português de Moçambique”

The Ministry of Education and Human Development reaffirms its commitment to include students' language experiences in the curriculum, with a view to improving the quality of education in the country.

The reaffirmation was made by the Vice-Minister of MIDEH, during the official launch of the Mozambique Portuguese dictionary project, a citizenship tool that aims to group together the words that are generally used in the Mozambican grammatical lexicon.

Manuel Basso said that the project will allow adjusting the reality of the students with the teaching and learning process in the country.

The coordinator of the Portuguese Dictionary Project in Mozambique, Inês Machungo, explained that the project will also contribute to the country's economic and social development.

On the occasion, the Ambassador of Mozambique in Portugal, António Costa, said that the Portuguese language in the country should be a factor of cohesion while respecting the relevance of local languages.

The official launch of the Mozambique Portuguese dictionary project takes place as part of the Portuguese Language Day celebrations, which takes place today, Thursday.

According to the "Mundo Lusíada" portal, the Mozambique Portuguese Dictionary follows on from the construction and publication, in 2014, of the Mozambican Orthographic Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language - VOMOLP, "a resource that allowed for the description of Mozambican Portuguese" and "the development of a first large-scale linguistic resource," according to the note.

VOMOLP is an integral part of the Vocabulário Ortográfico Comum da Língua Portuguesa (VOC), a collection of spelling vocabularies from other Portuguese-speaking countries.

According to the Camões Institute, the construction of DiPoMo, from a perspective of a global description of the lexicon of the Mozambican variety of the Portuguese language, allows its use in educational institutions and serves as a basis for the construction of teaching resources suitable for Mozambique.

It will also serve as a basis for the creation of computational resources, namely speech recognition and synthesis, spelling correction, and semantic indexing.
