Thousands of people without EDM power in the north

Milhares de pessoas sem energia da EDM no norte

Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) estimates that 54,856 people are without electricity in two provinces in the north of the country.

According to a statement received by our newsroom, 50,600 people in Nampula province are without electricity and 4,256 in Cabo Delgado province.

The document points to the recurrent rain in that region of the country as the cause for the interruption of electricity in some administrative posts.

"The rain and strong winds in the north of the country are causing damage to the electricity system, with reports of fallen poles, snapped power cables and interrupted power supplies, among other things," the report reads.

EDM says it has sent teams to gradually re-establish the electricity connection, but notes that "the weather conditions and the inaccessibility of some places have been major obstacles, affecting the delay in the work".
