At least a thousand children with vision problems will be screened and treated this week at the Polana-Caniço General Hospital (HGPC) in Maputo City, where ophthalmology services have just been introduced.
According to "Notícias", the activities will take place under the slogan "Inspiring the world's children to love their eyes" and will be carried out by 20 specialist doctors from the José Macamo, Mavalane and Central hospitals in Maputo.
Ophthalmologist Lácea Dimande, quoted in the publication, said that the campaign aims to inform communities about eye care, prevent irreversible blindness in adults and focus on children who can silently develop ophthalmic pathologies such as refractive errors, glaucoma and cataracts.
The source warned of the danger of patients not having at least one eye check-up every year and taking care of their eyes without a medical diagnosis, which can lead to irritation, eye strain and blindness in the most serious cases.
