MDM demands recount of votes in some municipalities

MDM exige recontagem de votos em algumas autarquias

The Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) is demanding a recount of votes in some municipalities where it ran on October 11. The Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) and the National Electoral Commission (CNE) are responsible for the irregularities recorded from voting to the vote count, according to the party's president.

"It is right that the results should be recounted on the basis of the existing notices. The conclusion we have reached is that the CNE has shown a total inability to manage the electoral processes in Mozambique," said Lutero Simango, quoted by the Mozambican daily STV.

The MDM is therefore demanding that the CNE be restructured because it is failing to carry out its duties, and accuses the STAE of not subordinating itself to the CNE.

"Throughout all these years, and particularly in this electoral process that is coming to an end, STAE has shown itself to be a body that is not subordinate to the CNE. It is independent of the CNE," he said.

For Luther, this makes it impossible to guarantee a transparent electoral process.

"We can't continue with a CNE that doesn't have the competence to manage and administer the electoral process. It's not enough to talk about administration. We also need to guarantee management, because they go hand in hand," he said.

On Tuesday, in an interview with STV NewsThe former and first president of the CNE, Brazão Mazula, said that the current STAE operates independently of the CNE, when it should be completely subordinate.

In fact, he suspects the existence of parallel electoral bodies, i.e. the CNE and STAE that are formal and known to everyone, and the CNE and STAE that act on the sly and enforce their decisions.
