Maternity services have been suspended at the 1st of May Health Center, on the outskirts of Maputo city, due to the effects of Severe Tropical Storm "Filipo" which hit southern Mozambique on Tuesday morning (12).
The storm, marked by rain and strong winds, left part of the maternity ward at the 1st of May Health Center without cover, leading to the suspension of activities.
"Because of the roof that collapsed at the 1st of May Health Center, all the pregnant women who were there were transferred to the Mavalane General Hospital," said Alice de Abreu, the councillor for health and social action, during the preliminary assessment of the storm's impact.
Quoted by AIMThe councillor revealed that the storm affected seven health centers, of which 1.º de Maio and dos Pescadores suffered the most.
"We have the Hulene Health Center which, on Wednesday, worked with many difficulties and is now closed, and the residents who seek health services at that unit are referred to the 1 de Junho Health Centers and the Mavalane General Hospital," he added.
