Maputo: Teachers condition exams on overtime pay

Maputo: Professores condicionam realização de exames ao pagamento de horas extraordinárias

Teachers at the Liberdade Secondary School, in the municipality of Matola, Maputo province, southern Mozambique, are making their exams, scheduled for next week, conditional on overtime pay.

According to a AIMThis Saturday (30), the teachers of that general secondary school marched along the main roads in the area. The teachers want immediate payment for the three years that the education sector owes them.

"We're going to demonstrate until the money goes into our accounts," said one of the teachers during the march, stressing that there will be no exams, at least at the Escola Secundaria da Liberdade, because the governing body has decided that "as long as there is no money in the accounts, there will be no exams".

Another teacher, Elias Langa, lamented the fact that the education sector is always making promises, without honoring them.

"It's promises upon promises that never materialize. So it doesn't mean that the teachers who are here are rebels, but the main thing that makes us march is our overtime. We work, but when it comes to payment, it's a big deal," he said.
