The vandalization of the police station in Inhassoro, Inhambane province, has put the South African oil company on high alert.
Sasol is seen as responsible for the poverty levels in the Inhassoro and Vilankulo districts, where it has been exploiting gas since 2004. The local population is not feeling the benefits of gas exploration after 20 years.
Poverty levels and unemployment are very high. The biggest beneficiaries of gas exploration are the elite who own shares and companies that provide services to the multinational, according to CIP Eleições.
Since October, the country has been experiencing a climate of post-election tension characterized by demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane in protest at the election results.
The people are also protesting against the ruling party's poor governance, lack of jobs, access to education and social inequalities.
