The demonstrations surrounding the general elections continue to cause grief in Mozambican families. And on the third of eight days of marching, the province of Nampula seems to be experiencing the most dramatic scenario.
According to the electoral bulletin of the Center for Public Integrity (CIP), the police of the Republic of Mozambique killed three demonstrators, two in the city of Nampula and the other in the town of Mecuburi.
"...but there are sources that point to more than seven deaths. There are dozens of confirmed wounded in the city of Nampula, Mecuburi, Nampula and Maputo," reads the document published today.
The bulletin states that it is not yet known how many citizens were arrested by the police, but that there were more than a dozen during yesterday's demonstrations.
The three main areas of demonstrations in Nampula were: the district of Meconta, where the population blocked the National Road, preventing the connection between the city of Nampula and the coastal and northern districts; the district of Mecubúri, where a demonstrator was shot dead after the Frelimo party headquarters was vandalized; and the city of Nampula, where people were shot dead, one of whom was oblivious to the demonstrations because he was having lunch.
"There are no exact figures on the number of people injured in the city of Nampula, Namialo and Mecuburi, but it is estimated that there are more than a dozen. In the city of Nampula alone, more than 10 people were admitted to the central hospital due to gunshot wounds," noted CIP.
