The widow of former Malawian vice-president Saulos Chilima, Mary Chilima, is unhappy with the report of the preliminary inquiry that led to the crash of the plane carrying her husband and is asking for help with a private investigation.
Mary Chilima, asked all concerned Malawians to join the cause of justice and for the sake of truth, to set up an independent commission of inquiry for a thorough investigation, according to Rádio Moçambique.
The appeal comes at a time when the Center for Economic Development has written a letter to President Lazarus Chakwera demanding that an independent Commission of Inquiry be set up within 14 days to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Saulos Chilima and eight other people in the Chikangawa forest in the Nkhatabay district on June 10, 2024.
The missive warns President Chakwera that failure to do what is necessary within the given timeframe in the interests of the nation will give rise to peaceful demonstrations across the country in search of justice.
For this organization, the report by the German Federal Aviation Accident Investigation Bureau shows clear cases of negligence and suppression of material facts.
The organization questions the Malawian head of state on the fact that so far no government official has been held accountable for omission.
The letter also says that Malawians are patiently waiting for President Chakwera to dismiss the Chief of Staff of the Malawi Defense Forces, General Paul Velentino Phiri, for allegedly allowing the country's late vice-president to travel on a severely disabled aircraft and for the delayed search for the injured.
It also calls on President Chakwera to hold accountable all senior government officials who were directly involved in the trip of the country's then vice-president. (Source:RM)
