Lutero Simango, the current leader of the bench of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) in the Mozambican Parliament, was elected this Sunday, president of the party with a total of 452 votes, corresponding to 87.9% against 9.9% for Silvério Ronguane.

The election took place in the early hours of this Sunday morning, by the way, the last day of the III Congress that has been held in the city of Beira since Friday.

A mechanical engineer by profession, Lutero Simango takes over the presidency at a time when attention is focused on recovering the party's image after the latest electoral defeats.

"I appreciate the trust that has been placed in our person, not in my person, in our person," said Lutero Simango as he took the floor after the results were announced, alluding to the fact that his candidacy was proposed by the party's grassroots.
