Lurdes Mutola to have commemorative plaque in the United States

The Mozambican athlete, 800m champion in the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, Maria de Lurdes Mutola will be honored by the organization of the Oregon Track and Field World Championships22, to be held in August in that North American state.

In a statement quoted by Lusa, the organization said it was "proud to announce the creation of the Oregon22 Heritage Trail", which will honor 22 athletes in their hometowns or in places that have a special meaning for an athlete, with plaques unveiled in these locations.

"The goals of this project are to create a permanent, commemorative reminder of the World Championships coming to Oregon," said Kari Westlund, one of the people in charge of the initiative.

Mutola, who was also a bronze medalist at Athens 2004, as well as a three-time outdoor and seven-time indoor world champion, will have a commemorative plaque at Shana Barr Trail Marker in Willamalane, Springfield.
