The President of Brazil, Lula da Silva, was rushed to the Sírio-Libanês Hospital this Monday and underwent emergency surgery after complaining of severe headaches.
According to the international media, 79-year-old Lula underwent a craniotomy to drain a hematoma. The President suffered a fall on October 19 this year at his home. This would have been the source of the hematoma. He received five stitches at the time.
The surgery went smoothly, and Lula is doing well, according to the medical team quoted by the media. He is currently under observation in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
"The president has progressed well, he came out of surgery practically awake, he was extubated, and he is now stable, talking normally, eating and should be under observation there for the next few days," said doctor Roberto Kalil at a press conference.
Lula da Silva is expected to remain in the ICU for at least 24 hours. "It's more of a precaution," he added.
The complication, which led to surgery, is common after a fall like the one Lula suffered, doctors said.
