Liz Truss é a nova primeira-ministra do Reino Unido

Foreign Minister Liz Truss was announced today in London as the winner of the internal election for the leadership of the Conservative party, so she will succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.

Truss won 81,326 of the votes from some 180,000 grassroots activists, while rival Rishi Sunak, a former finance minister, got 60,399, revealed Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee, the party council responsible for the process.

The result was expected and confirms the advantage recorded in several polls published since July.

Truss, 47, will be the third woman prime minister of the UK, after Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, and the fourth politician to hold the post in six years.

According to Lusa, Boris Johnson will inform Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday of his resignation and the monarch will appoint Liz Truss and ask her to form a government as leader of the party with a parliamentary majority.

The hearings will take place at Balmoral Castle in northern Scotland, where the Queen is staying, breaking with the tradition of taking place at Buckingham Palace, with a spokesman for the 96-year-old monarch citing mobility problems to avoid the trip to London.
