Hulene Dump: Survivors complain about lack of money to pay rent

Lixeira de Hulene: Sobreviventes reclamam da falta de dinheiro para para pagar renda de casa

The amount had been paid for four years by the Maputo Municipal Council to families waiting for new housing, but the city council suspended the payment.

More than 200 families removed five years ago from the vicinity of the Hulene dump, the largest solid waste dump in the country, located on the outskirts of Maputo city, are now living in uncertainty due to the lack of rent payments on the houses where they are waiting for their final homes.

Since the February 18, 2018 collapse of part of the garbage dump that killed 17 people, survivors have left their homes, with promises to be resettled in another neighborhood.

"We owe five months' rent and the landlords are now running to us because of the debts," explains Efigênia Teve, quoted by VOA.

At around 70 years old, Aventina Adelaide is one of those who is on the verge of becoming homeless because of the city council's debt and is asking for her situation to be remedied.

"The owner of the house where I live wants the money that was promised by the City Council and says that if I don't pay within a few days I'll be evicted and I don't know how to find the amount," she lamented.

Gilda Florentino, director of Social Action at Maputo municipality, says that the problem is that the municipality no longer has the funds to pay the rents, let alone to complete the promised houses.

"The houses are still not finished and the amount that was given as support was paid until September and the payment has stopped because the municipality is currently out of money," she explained.

Social activists have come out to repudiate the city council's justifications and say it must find solutions to overcome the problem.
