"Hulene's garbage dump still has room for more garbage", - argues the town council

“Lixeira de Hulene ainda tem espaço para receber mais lixo”, – defende edilidade

The Maputo municipality says that the Hulene dump, located in the Mozambican capital, still has enough space to receive more waste, but acknowledges that there are access difficulties at the site.

According to the municipal director of Environment and Health in Maputo City, Sérgio Manhique, the problem for the moment is the difficulty of accessing that space, however, the dump is still in a condition to be used

"The big problem is how to get there, but what we're doing is preparing the accesses. We still have space for waste disposal. But when it rains there is a lot of accumulation of rainwater," emphasized the source, talking about the management of solid waste in that dump that is already threatening to invade Julius Nyerere Avenue.

Regarding the closure of the dump, the official, quoted by AIM, said that there are no dates, but studies are already underway in the municipal district of Ka Tembe for the construction of a new landfill.

The city council's position on the situation of the dump comes at a time when environmentalists point to the garbage situation in the country as very complicated and worrying, especially in the city of Maputo, where it poses a threat to public health.

In addition to the city of Maputo, several environmentalists also consider the garbage situation in other large cities to be excessive and worrying, such as Nampula, where the local authority is incapable of collecting solid waste, a scenario that puts residents in a vulnerable situation.

Last week, the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, commented on the garbage situation in Maputo, calling on residents to collaborate in garbage management, since, in his view, the fault lies not only with the municipality, but also with the residents themselves.
