According to British insurer 'CIA-Landlords' rankingthe Portuguese capital is the third "least viable" city to live in, surpassed only by its European counterparts London and Rome.
The ranking was prepared with data on the rent in the cities, determined by subtracting the cost of living, the average cost of rent, and the average wage. It is important to stress that the cost of living includes the cost of transportation, supermarket purchases, utility bills, sports and leisure activities, child care, and clothing costs.
Lisbon has an average rent for a three-bedroom apartment of 1,377 euros, which, subtracting the average wage (878 euros) and the cost of living (475 euros), shows a negative value of 974 euros.
Rome, which ranks first on the list, has a negative cost of 1,196 euros. London, which ranks between the Portuguese and Italian capitals, has a negative cost of 1,071 euros.
According to a study released last week by the Idealista portal, Lisbon remains the city where the effort rate to buy a house is the highest. The inhabitants of the Portuguese capital have to allocate 53% of their household income for the charges of buying the property via a bank loan.
