The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Américo Letela, said yesterday that one of the biggest challenges facing the Public Prosecutor's Office is the fight against organized and transnational crime. To this end, he advocated improving international judicial cooperation.
"International legal and judicial cooperation is one of the main concerns of the Public Prosecutor's Office. Crime, often organized and transnational, occurs in one country and can end up across borders. And the success of investigations undoubtedly requires cooperation with other countries. This obliges us, in fact, to strengthen our cooperation mechanisms," said Letela, after being sworn in by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
Speaking to journalists, he said that the institution should work on improving institutional development. This included monitoring the evolution of the legal framework.
But Letela also said that the Public Prosecutor's Office needs to focus its efforts on guaranteeing the qualification of magistrates and bailiffs in order to meet the challenges facing the districts.
Acknowledging that the institutions of justice, including the PGR, have had their image 'pinched', Letela said that the MP will act in accordance with the law applicable in Mozambique.
