Kyiv to rename streets and squares associated with Russia

Vitali Klitschko, mayor of the Ukrainian capital, presented a proposal on Friday to change the names of streets and squares associated with Russia, the official said on Telegram.

"Friends! Today I submitted a project to rename the former 'Friendship Square between Kyiv and Moscow' to 'Mariupol Heroes' Square'. And the deputies supported the initiative," Klitschko wrote.

According to the same note, the Kyiv City Council has approved "a number of renominations" of other establishments in the city, the necessary procedures for which "have already been prepared and approved."

"There are still dozens of streets and objects in Kyiv with names associated with the perpetrator. Their renaming is relevant," he pointed out, adding that this measure includes new names for "avenues, metro stations and other buildings."

Launched on February 24, the Russian military offensive in Ukraine has killed nearly 2,000 civilians, including about 150 children, according to data from the United Nations, which warns that the actual number of civilian casualties is likely to be much higher.
