Death Fast: Death toll rises to 73

Jejum da morte: Número de mortos sobe para 73

Kenyan police have recovered 73 bodies, mostly from mass graves in a forest in eastern Kenya, which are thought to be those of followers of a Christian sect. The followers were said to have been induced to fast from hunger until death, in the belief of elevation to heaven.

Updates on the number of bodies found continue apace, as more bodies are discovered. In fact, the number of bodies found could even rise to 73, said the police chief of Malindi sub-county, John Kemboi.

According to the Red Cross in Kenya, 112 people have been reported missing.

The followers of the self-proclaimed International Church of the Good News lived in several isolated camps in a 324-hectare area of the Shakahola forest, 700 km from Nairobi, where the bodies were found.

The leader of the sect, Paul Mackenzie, was arrested on April 14, following a tip-off suggesting the existence of shallow graves with the bodies of at least 31 of his followers. The head of the National Police, Japhet Koome, said that 14 other members of the sect were in custody.
