French actor, Omar Sy, and Netflix have signed a contract to produce feature films for several years. However, the term is believed to be due to the overwhelming success of the streamer's series "Lupin" starring Sy.
This is Netflix's first deal with a French actor or filmmaker. This partnership will allow Sy's production company in Paris (Adequat) and L.A. (CAA) to develop original films for the streamer. Thus, the Lupin star will star in the projects, in which he will also act as executive producer.
"I experienced Netflix's collaboration with artists and their passion for bringing unique and diverse stories to the world," he said. Omar Sy was a creative producer on some episodes of "Lupin."
"We look forward to working closely with Omar and his team as he grows as a producer and brings more unique stories and voices to Netflix," said Gaelle Mareschi, a film veteran, and Netflix director.
Sy rose to fame with the comedy "The Intouchables" by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano about ten years ago. He became the first black actor to win a César award, France's highest cinematographic honor.
But it was only with "Lupin" that Sy achieved international fame. Sy stars in "Lupin" as Assane Diop, a character inspired by the French story of the thief Arsène Lupin. The "Lupin" series, created by George Kay, had its first episodes directed by Louis Leterrier. "Lupin" is one of Netflix's most popular series to date.
One of Omar Sy's next Netflix projects will be the action-comedy film 'Tour de Force'. The film won't hit the screens until next year.
