About 900,000 people are at risk of food security in Cabo Delgado province. The Technical Secretariat for Food Security and Nutrition (SETSAN) says the problem is due to lack of production, combined with drought and terrorism.
The displacement of the population due to terrorism in Cabo Delgado causes many of the cultivated fields to be abandoned, and the irregular rainfall and other factors expose people to possible food shortages.
"The study that was done last campaign predicted 1.8 million people, but from the projection made recently, they are one million four hundred people, of which 900,000 in Cabo Delgado are at risk of food insecurity," said Leonor Neves, executive secretary of SETSAN quoted by "O País," to then clarify "they are not hungry, they are at risk of food insecurity."
Leonor Neves also said that "the partners' interventions are concentrating their actions for those regions where we have greater shocks of food insecurity," adding that the "situation will improve in the coming days, due to various actions that are being carried out in different parts of the country, including places where there is a displaced population that is receiving various agricultural inputs.
The country is improving the fight against chronic malnutrition in children up to 5 years old.
In eight years, the malnutrition rate has dropped from 43% to 38%. The northern provinces have the most worrying numbers. "The situation of chronic malnutrition in Mozambique is improving, however challenges remain. We have gone from 43% in 2014 in children under 5 years of age to 38 % currently. It has reduced, yes, but as you see, it is an indicator that we still need to improve. The northern zone is more critical. Nampula registers an average of 46.7%, Cabo delgado and Niassa with 45%, and we have the national average of 38%. We have the best scenario in Maputo Province, where we have 8%, which is good."
Maputo City hosted this Monday the eleventh Consultative Council of the Technical Secretariat for Food Security and Nutrition. The meeting brought together several public and private institutions to discuss the proposed national policy on food security and nutrition.
