Inhambane/Manifestations: MP demands compensation from Venâncio Mondlane and PODEMOS

Inhambane/Manifestações: MP exige indemnização a Venâncio Mondlane e PODEMOS

The Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) in Inhambane province has filed a civil suit against former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane and the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS).

The body is asking for compensation of 4,125,505 meticais for the damage caused in the province during the post-election demonstrations.

The Public Prosecutor's Office assumes that Mondlane and the party that supported his presidential candidacy are to blame for the vandalizing and looting of public and private property.

"We understand that there are acts committed there, directly or indirectly, against the people against whom we are bringing this action," said Pompílio Xavier, the public prosecutor in the province.

"The lawsuit was filed in the Inhambane Provincial Court on November 29, 2024... At no point in this declaratory judgment lawsuit does it say that Venâncio Mondlane destroyed 350 kilometers of road. In the action, we are saying that the sections where the damage was caused are duly identified," he explained.

He said that the damage to the road network alone amounted to 2,804,346 meticais, which includes other damage totaling four million meticais.
