The government, through the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, has instructed the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO) to print and distribute more than 5,000 driving licenses held up at that institution due to the breakdown of the printing system until next Monday (24).
The ultimatum was given by the minister of transport and logistics, João Matlhombe, who visited the headquarters of the National Road Transport Institute in Maputo this Monday to find out how the institution works.
"We have evaluated the service that is provided to the citizen, concerning, more or less, the issuing of driving licenses, and we have urged INATRO to improve the quality of services. Therefore, there is work to be done over the next few days, firstly, to ensure that requests for around 5,000 licenses that we have pending are issued and printed in the next seven days, by next week all the licenses have to be printed and distributed throughout the country. We can't continue to have citizens waiting a long time for driving licenses, as has been happening," said João Matlombe, quoted by the newspaper "The Country".
On the same occasion, he announced his intention to replace the current system for printing driving licenses, stating that a new tender could be launched within eight months to find a new provider.
"We're going to work with the Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation and the Ministry of Justice so that, within eight months, we can hold a new tender to hire a service provider with an integrated system for printing a digital driving license, which also allows for the integration of the registration and ownership title, to make it easier for citizens, as they can't contact several institutions to register their vehicles," Matlombe said.
