A woman discovered that she had a contraceptive implant lodged in her pulmonary arteries, after she went to an appointment to have the device removed and several doctors couldn't find it in her left arm. The case happened in England.
Three years after Rececca Hardy had the implant, she went to the doctor to have the device removed, as it had expired. However, several doctors saw the patient and were unable to locate the implant where it had been placed. According to Daily MailThe implant was later discovered in a pulmonary artery.
The woman was shocked by the discovery, but was advised by doctors not to remove the implant, as it is a dangerous procedure. "There is no 100% chance of it going well, or even of it being possible to remove it. Besides, it could be worse for me and rupture my artery. As I haven't had any problems or difficulties over the years, I agreed to keep it where it is and not take any risks," said the woman, quoted by News to the Minute.
Although unusual, the case is not unique and has already happened in Portugal. The British newspaper recalls that, in 2019, a Portuguese woman underwent a procedure to remove an implant from her lungs. At the time, doctors couldn't find the device in the Portuguese woman's arm and tests found it in her lungs.
Back in 2023, a young Australian woman had to schedule heart and lung surgery after a contraceptive implant didn't go as planned.
