HIV/AIDS is the country's leading killer - Report

HIV/AIDS is the disease that kills the most people in the country, according to studies carried out by the National Institutes of Health and Statistics between 2019 and 2021. Cancer and malaria are the next leading causes of death.

According to a report released yesterday by the National Health Institute, in 2021 alone, around 13% of the deaths registered in the country, in 8,000 households, were due to HIV/AIDS.

"Although HIV has greatly reduced the proportion of deaths in the last 12 years, it is still the main cause of death in Mozambique, especially in individuals between the ages of 15 and 49," said Ivalda Macicame, National Director of Surveys at the National Health Institute, during the presentation of the report.

However, according to her, there has been a very large reduction over the years, "which shows that there has been prevention and control of the disease to reduce the mortality rate".

Eduardo Samo Gudo, director-general of the National Health Institute, said on the occasion that the Mortality Report is extremely important as it will allow strategies to be defined for reducing deaths.

The National Institute of Health also speaks of the need to strengthen the health system in communities as a way of reducing the mortality rate.
