h2n Releases Annual Media Gender Report 2022

h2n lança Relatório Anual de Género na Media 2022

On Thursday, April 20, the h2n Association launched the UP Maputo campus. Annual Report on Gender in the MediaThe article, which looks at how gender aspects are portrayed in the national press, highlights the importance of including women's perspectives in the media.

According to Farida Ustá, Director of the Asas project, the report seeks to illustrate how issues related to gender equality are portrayed in the media and seeks to contribute to reflection and increased debate around these issues in the media.

Ustá adds that with the publication of this report, it is hoped that it can serve as a reference for students, journalists and decision-makers to create and reorient strategies with a view to improving the current scenario.

From the data collected from the different media, it can be seen that, in terms of representation, the printed newspaper is one of the media with the fewest women journalists in the newsroom, which shows that, although women are gaining more space in the profession, they still face challenges that make it impossible for them to dedicate themselves to the profession to the same extent as male journalists.

"Overcoming the preponderance of men over women in the media is still a huge challenge due to socially constructed habits and prejudices that discredit women's abilities and remain ingrained in newsrooms. Today's reality shows that the existence of women in decision-making processes is extremely important to ensure openness in the treatment of issues. Hence the need to invest in this group to ensure the improvement of the current gender situation in the media and to try to generate a debate around this very relevant issue," commented Sheynise Muzé, media coordinator.

It should be noted that the Annual Report on Gender in the Media is produced as part of the implementation of the Asas project (Project to Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women and Adolescent Girls in Mozambique), funded by Global Affairs - Canada and implemented by h2n.
