The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, congratulated Mozambique on the closure of the last base of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), which he considered to be proof that it is possible to choose peace.
"I congratulate Mozambique and its people on the closure of the last Renamo base. This important milestone serves as a reminder that it is always possible to choose peace," Guterres wrote on the social network Twiter, quoted by Lusa.
"I pledge the UN's full support for the peace process," added the former Portuguese prime minister.
It should be remembered that the last Renamo base was closed in Vanduzi, Gorongosa district, in Sofala province, last Thursday, in the presence of President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade.
The ceremony was attended by the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and the leader of Renamo, Ossufo Momade.
"The closure of this base demonstrates the unwavering determination of my government and Renamo to no longer return to military hostilities and to consolidate lasting peace in Mozambique," Fiulipe Nyusi said at the time.
The closure of Renamo's 16th base is in line with the Maputo Agreement for Peace and National Reconciliation, signed in August 2019, said the UN representation in Mozambique.
As part of this closure, around three hundred and forty-seven Renamo officers officially transitioned to civilian life, followed by the reintegration phase, which includes the start of pension payments to the demobilized.
"We want to see in the next few days the settlement, the payment of pensions to our combatants and we appeal for there to be no more non-compliance with the agreements we have reached," said the Renamo leader at the ceremony.
