Grindrod celebrated an important milestone in the ongoing development of its Matola Solid Bulk Terminal with the official groundbreaking ceremony, which marks the start of its expansion program.
The event, chaired by João Jorge Matlombe, Minister of Transport and Logistics, marked the start of Phase 1 of the development of the area Back-of-Terminal (BOT), This reaffirms Grindrod's long-term commitment to investing in Mozambique's logistics infrastructure and growing regional trade.
Six months ago, at this same terminal, Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, inaugurated Grindrod's new administrative building and officially announced the start of this expansion project.
Today's ceremony represents the realization of that vision - turning plans into action and reinforcing Mozambique's role as an important regional logistics corridor.
Since taking over operational management of the terminal in 2007, Grindrod has invested more than 52 million dollars in modernizing its facilities, integrating new technologies and expanding handling capacity.
With the acquisition of the terminal's remaining 35% and the extension of the sub-concession with Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo (MPDC) until 2058, Grindrod is strengthening its position as Mozambique's long-term logistics partner.
Phase 1 represents an investment of 40 million dollars (out of a total of 80 million dollars) and will allow the complete mechanization of the BOT area, increasing the terminal's capacity from the current 8 million tonnes per year (mtpa) to 12 mtpa, and expanding the area from 40,800 m² to 157,760 m². Completion of this phase is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
Phase 2 will add new storage and loading infrastructure, integrating operations between the front and back of the terminal, making it possible to reach up to 15 mtpa in the future.
"Today we are transforming vision into action and action into concrete results for our country and the SADC region,” said João Matlombe.
“This expansion strengthens the Maputo Corridor and consolidates Mozambique's position as a regional logistics hub, through collaboration between the government and the private sector.”
“The resumption of this expansion marks a renewed commitment to operational excellence and efficient, competitive logistics solutions,” added Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk and future CEO of Grindrod Group.
“With modern infrastructure and integrated systems, the Matola Terminal is ready to respond to growing regional demand and promote Africa's trade with the world.”
