Doctors' strike: Government toughens its talk

Greve dos Médicos: Governo endurece o discurso

The government said yesterday during the Council of Ministers that the striking doctors will have to decide whether or not they want to continue working in the State Apparatus.

"At some point, the state will have to put the striking doctors in a position where they can choose whether they want to serve in the civil service or leave their posts."

According to the spokesman for the 27th session of the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suazi, "the Executive will not only continue with the scheduling of absences, but has also been thinking about and implementing strategies to solve the problem of the doctors' strike. There are 60 Mozambican doctors who have graduated and are members of the Order of Doctors who are contracted."

Regarding the number of doctors on strike, the Executive estimates that there are only 5% out of almost 60,000 across the country.

At the end of Tuesday's Council of Ministers session, the government spokesman stressed that the government has been working to satisfy the doctors' demands.

"Of the five points that we had to satisfy in July, four have been exceeded, with one relating to overtime until 2020, which is now almost 80% satisfied," said Filimão Suaze.
