The government, through the Ministry of Land and Environment, said on Friday (22) that construction work on the Matlemele landfill, in Maputo province, should start next October.
The construction of the new landfill is intended to replace the Hulene dump, which continues to receive solid waste despite signs of saturation. However, the Minister of Land and Environment, Ivete Maibasse, who was speaking on the sidelines of the International Day of Forests celebrations, said there was no date as to when this would stop happening.
"We are now working with the financier of this project so that by the second half of this year, specifically in October, we can launch the construction work for the new infrastructure (Matlemele landfill). The closure of the Hulene dump depends on the construction and identification of a new area where solid waste can be deposited," explained Ivete Maibasse, quoted by the newspaper "The Country".
She added that there is an effort being made by the Executive, in a joint operation with other sectors such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
