Government unaware of threats to medical profession and recommends complaint to PGR

Governo desconhece ameaças à classe médica e recomenda denúncia à PGR

The Mozambican executive does not know the origin of the threats to life (death threats) of three members of the board of the Mozambican Medical Association (AMM), because of the strike and the "arm wrestling" in the negotiations.

On Sunday (20), at the meeting that extended the strike for another 21 days, AMM denounced the threats to the lives of the Association's President, Milton Tatia, the Vice President, Paulo Samu Gudo, and the Secretary General, Napoleão Viola.

"In the last few days, the tone of the threat has increased. We received information [that] a superior order had been given - those superior orders that have no face or name - for the three members of the board of the Mozambique Medical Association to be shot," Milton Tatia told the press.

According to Inocêncio Impissa, spokesman for the 30th Session of the Council of Ministers this Tuesday, the government's statements at the previous session were merely explanatory and had nothing to do with addressing threats to the medical profession.

"Someone interpreted it as a threat, but it's also the case that the entire press or society knows that the entire relationship with the employee is based on dialog and standards. We just reminded them and mentioned it. I interpreted some rules for the benefit of the population and I don't think there was or has been any possible threat there. We were communicating," explained Impissa.

On the other hand, the Executive says that it became aware of these intimidations through the press and recommends AMM to follow the legal channels of denunciation.

"Our encouragement is that the President of the Association and the group of colleagues who have been victims of this threat should present more information to the Attorney General's Office so that it can do its job," he recommended, noting that the government is not the anonymous entity making the threats.

The Deputy Minister of Health, Ilesh Jani, is due to hold a press conference on Wednesday to present the general situation of the health sector in the country, according to assurances from Impissa.
