The government built 86 more classrooms in the first half of this year to reduce the number of students studying outside in the country.
According to the Minister of Education on Wednesday, during the opening of the Ministry's coordinating council, "86 more classrooms were built by the end of the first semester, making a total of 2,786 elementary school classrooms in our country, which corresponds to 83% of the five-year target".
Carmelita Namashulua, revealed that Mozambique has 7,484 classes outside, often studying under trees due to the lack of classrooms. The latest figures released by the Ministry of Education in 2021 show that there are 28,269 grass and adobe classrooms in the country.
On the same occasion, the minister also said that between January and June of this year, the sector also rehabilitated two secondary schools and expanded three others, also noting a slight increase in the teaching staff.
Namashulua also expressed concern about the "high rates" of school dropouts in the country, as well as violence, drug and alcohol abuse in schools, considering that these situations "tarnish the image of the sector and jeopardize the future of children, adolescents and young people".
