Government moves towards compulsory retirement for civil servants aged between 60 and 65

Governo avança com reforma compulsiva de funcionários públicos com idades entre os 60 e 65 anos

The Mozambican government, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), has ordered the compulsory retirement of all civil servants between the ages of 65 (for men) and 60 (for women).

An order issued by the MEF, and quoted by AIMhas given all the officials covered by the measure ten days from August 1 to submit the necessary documents to regularize their pensions.

"This involves a pension application addressed to the director general of the National Social Security Institute, a certified copy of the applicant's identity document, their tax number (NUIT) and a certificate proving the length of time they have worked in the public sector," the document states.

Later on, the same order also clarifies that each employee must hand in the documentation to the human resources manager in their sector, pointing out that they will start receiving their pensions in six months' time.

However, the Ministry of Economy and Finance does not estimate how many officials will be affected by compulsory retirement, nor how much money the measure is expected to save.
