Government moves ahead with reconstruction of classrooms destroyed by Cyclone Gombe

More than 100 classrooms destroyed by Cyclone Gombe in March in the city of Nampula are already being rebuilt with the financial support of the government, as part of the implementation of the emergency program.

According to governor Manuel Rodrigues, the efforts being undertaken in the reconstruction of these classrooms are intended to alleviate the situation of a significant number of students who still study under trees in the provincial capital, after they were destroyed by the storm.

"As in other regions of our province, the city of Nampula was also devastated by the effects of the cyclone, not only the agricultural sector was affected, but also the education sector. Therefore, we are already working on the reconstruction", said Manuel Rodrigues.

According to Manuel Rodrigues, quoted by the newspaper Notícias, in schools where the lack of classrooms is considered critical due to the delay of the reconstruction works, the government is distributing tents, with the help of cooperation partners, in order to guarantee the normal course of classes.

In the city of Nampula, cyclone Gombe not only destroyed school infrastructures of precarious construction, but also of conventional construction, leaving thousands of students out in the cold. The Education Sector highlights the fact that the reconstruction process is counting on the participation of parents and guardians.

The sector is developing activities to sensitize teachers not to abandon the schools where classrooms were destroyed, encouraging them to look for local alternatives to ensure the normal course of the teaching and learning process.
