Overall, the big five international tech companies will profit a total of €279,560 million in 2021, up 55.6% from 2020, driven by the pandemic-driven change in habits despite the semiconductor crisis and supply problems.
According to data compiled by Efe news agency, Amazon, Meta (which controls Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp), Alphabet (which controls Google), Apple and Microsoft have reached a profit of 279,560 million euros in 2021.
This represents a rise of 55.6% from 179,660 million in 2020, a year when, unlike other major industries, US tech companies' profits increased due to changes in habits caused by the covid-19 pandemic, such as increased telecommuting or 'online' shopping.
Good results for technology companies in 2021 include those of Alphabet, which nearly doubled its profit from 35,120 million in 2020 to 66,320 million the following year.
It was followed by Amazon, with an annual increase of 56.4%, and Apple, which grew by 57.3% and became the highest earning company among the five (€87.7 billion).
In contrast, Meta had the smallest profit growth in 2021 (35.11TP2Q to 34,340 million), while Amazon earned the least, 29,110 million euros.
Taken together, these five tech majors surpassed the €1 billion revenue barrier in 2021, adding up to €1.23 trillion, up 27.8% from 2020, when they billed €961,130 million.
By companies, Alphabet was the company with the highest revenue increase, at 41.1%, followed by Meta (37.2%). However, Amazon was the tech company with the highest revenues, reaching 409,880 million in 2021, up 21.7% from 2020.
In the final quarter of last year, the big five tech companies' profits rose 26.61TP2Q year-over-year to €86,010 million, highlighting Amazon's big growth, which doubled its numbers year-over-year, rising to €12,470 million.
