GCCC accuses the president of the Civil Aviation Institute of mismanagement

GCCC acusa o presidente do Instituto de Aviação Civil de má gestão

The Public Ministry, through the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC), has brought charges against the president of the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique (IACM), João de Abreu, for alleged "harmful management" in the institution.

In the case, with registration 14/11/P/2020 and which is underway in the Judicial Court of Maputo City, Abreu and the head of the Management and Procurement Executive Unit of the IACM, César Maurício, are accused of abuse of office or function, violation of management rules, payment of undue remuneration and economic participation in business.According to the indictment, cited today by the weekly Savana, the two managers are alleged to have authorized in 2019 direct awards to different companies for the provision of services and materials, violating the requirements required by law.

In statements released today by the weekly, the president of the IACM said he had a "clear conscience", considering that the accusation brought by the Public Ministry is based on anonymous complaints from employees with hidden purposes.

"I have done nothing unusual, and so I fear nothing. But it is painful that, after so many years of exemplary service to the state, in the final stretch of my career, people come and try to lynch us for reasons we don't know. It's sad," he declared.

João de Abreu has presided over the Civil Aviation Institute of Mozambique since 2013.

The president of the IACM is also publicly known as Commander Abreu and is one of the best known aviation pilots in Mozambique for his long career with the state-owned company Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM).

In addition to João de Abreu and César Maurício, the Public Ministry has listed as defendants Sara Ginabay Mussa, former Director of Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology of the IACM, Regina Esperança, former head of the Department of Finance and Property of the IACM, Edith Samuel, former head of Human Resources, and Sérgio Micael, former head of the Department of Finance and Property.
