The reconstruction of four out of a total of seven state offices destroyed and vandalized at the height of the post-election protests in the district of Chibuto, Gaza province, is costing more than 20 million meticais.
The information was given on Thursday by the Chibuto district administrator, Cacilda Banze.
Some 10 months later, four of the seven institutions are still in a critical state, and have therefore been closed, reported Cacilda Banze, quoted by the newspaper "O País".
"Right now, we're hugging SDPI. Both the residence and the headquarters itself were destroyed, burnt to the ground, with all the equipment there and many files too (...) And we have the headquarters of the administrative post also totally destroyed (...) The commander's house was also totally destroyed, but we are already recovering," the source revealed.
However, according to the administrator, there are still no funds to start rebuilding the institutions, which are budgeted at more than 20 million meticais.
"We've met with the partners to see if we can join forces because, as you know, we're having a lot of difficulties at the moment in terms of government. We're talking about infrastructure, because then we'll also need equipment," he said.
As a way out, the district government assures that it is knocking on doors with the business community and that, over the next two months, Chibuto will host various tourist and cultural events aimed, among other things, at reviving the local economy.
"We know that Chibuto was a popular place for demonstrations. A lot of infrastructure was destroyed. This is a way of reviving our district's economy. We're expecting over 30,000 people to rush to Bambeni," he told journalists.
In addition to state institutions, six commercial and tourist establishments were destroyed in Chibuto, three of which are still closed due to insecurity.
