Covid 19 funds: MINEDH officials accused of embezzling almost 60 million

Six officials from the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH) are accused by the Central Office for Combating Corruption (GCCC) of embezzling and unduly paying around 60 million meticais from Covid-19 funds.

According to the News The accused are charged with abuse of office or function and embezzlement, and the case has been referred to the Maputo City Judicial Court for further proceedings.

The facts date back to May 2022, when the GCCC became aware of the existence of a management report on Covid-19 funds for 2020, produced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The money was made available to the government by various partners in the areas of Public Works, Health, Education, Agriculture, Social Action, Disaster Management, Water, Energy, the State Business Sector, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and to support local authorities and the state treasury.
