The Global Fund has just made one million dollars available to support Mozambique in the fight against malaria in the context of the impact of Cyclone Freddy.
The amount is available immediately. What will be made available over the next three years is 770 million to fight HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
"This (amount) is immediately available and is to mitigate the impact of malaria caused by stagnant waters that still exist in the country," said the Fund's executive director, Peter Sands, as quoted by "O País".
The Fund has grants that it makes available to countries to fight the three diseases and, to this end, "the Global Fund gives allocations per country on a three-year basis; the next three-year period starts on January 1, 2024 and the allocation for Mozambique will be 770 million dollars. In reality, we will give more than that," said Sands.
Among the Global Fund's major investors is Great Britain, in third place. It is from there that the Minister for Development and Africa, Andrew Mitchell, visited the country and highlighted the progress that Mozambique is making in combating malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.
"Recently, we have seen a reduction in Mozambique of around 34 or 35% in tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and, so far this year, a reduction of 50% in malaria," he said, quoted by the newspaper.
During his visit to Mozambique, the British minister is also expected to monitor trade relations between the two countries, with a focus on the energy sector.
