Road Fund had deficit of 93% for emergency works in 2022

Out of a total of eight billion meticais needed, the Roads Fund only got around 457.4 million Meticais to finance emergency works for the past rainy season (2021/2022), causing a deficit of 93%.

The information was provided by the Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA), Ângelo Macuácua, a few days ago at a conference on sovereign insurance against natural disasters in Maputo

"In 2022, eight billion Meticais were needed to deal with the damage caused by the rainy season. That amount is to get the roads sector up and running, to maintain the country's roads. However, with the amount mobilized, we couldn't even maintain one km of road," said Macuácua.

According to the official, for the current rainy season (which began in October and ends in March), the rains are expected to affect around 2,500 km of roads across the country and 14 bridges could be affected, among other damage to the road network. The estimated cost of dealing with this damage is three billion meticais.

As a way of reversing the centenary, Macuácua advocates the creation of a fund dedicated to emergency works, through the support of development partners to the State Budget for emergency works.
