O Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) criticizes the silence of the current government formed by Daniel Chapo in the face of the country's biggest prison break.
The case took place on December 25, 2024, when 1534 inmates "escaped" from the Central Prison and the Machava Maximum Security Penitentiary Establishment, aka B.O.
The escape resulted in the deaths of around 100 inmates. Thirty-four were shot dead when the police tried to dissuade them. Others were killed in the early hours of December 26 after being captured or returning voluntarily.
In the meantime, intelligence gathering has led the CDD to realize that "the main objective was to facilitate the release of three specific groups of individuals," namely terrorists, kidnappers and drug traffickers.
From interviews with 39 informants, including inmates, police, doctors and the ordinary population surrounding the jails, it emerged that the plan led to the "release" of 30 insurgents, including Mozambicans and Tanzanians (one recaptured); fifteen (15) kidnappers and individuals involved in drug trafficking - only five are said to have escaped; and two individuals linked to the case of drugs seized at Maputo International Airport, including Indian citizens.
For the CDD, the new Minister for Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Mateus Saize, should investigate whether the Commission of Inquiry announced by the then government spokesman and deputy minister, Filimão Suaze, was really set up, since there is no report on the evasion, and if not, he should set it up and publish its composition "in the name of transparency".
