The secretary-general of Frelimo, the ruling party, Roque Silva, said this Sunday, at the close of the campaign for the local elections, that the aim is to win all the municipalities and promote the "transformation" agenda.
At a rally that closed the campaign for the sixth Mozambican local elections on October 11 in Maputo, Roque Silva said that "we ran in the 65 municipalities with our eyes set on victory (...) We ran in the 65 municipalities with our eyes set on development and transformation".
"We have an agenda of major transformations. What we want is not to win elections so that we can carry on doing things in the same way, because Frelimo is a party that always feels challenged to bring about change and transformation. That's why we say that Frelimo is the force for change," he said.
In an election campaign in which the opposition parties accused Frelimo activists of hostile acts and attempts at electoral fraud, Roque Silva, quoted by Lusa, praised the "civic manner" in which the campaign took place.
"Throughout the country we have seen Frelimo members and supporters campaigning in a very polite manner, refraining from any kind of violence or harassment of others. This is a clear demonstration that, as a party, we are growing not only quantitatively, but above all qualitatively and in terms of our democratic awareness," said the Frelimo secretary-general, who campaigned throughout the country for 13 days.
"We are aware that at some point, those who are our competitors tried to create a provocation here, a provocation there, but in a calm way we knew how to get around it," said Roque Silva.
Mozambicans will choose 65 new mayors on October 11, including in 12 new municipalities, which join 53 existing ones.
