The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said today in Gorongosa, Sofala province, that wars and climate change are threats to wildlife.
The head of state was speaking during the celebrations for the International Day for Forest and Wildlife Conservationists.
"War and instability, without looking for culprits, have catastrophic effects on nature," said Nyusi, referring to the death of animals, reduced capacity to control illegal practices in the forest such as poaching and trafficking and over-exploitation of resources.
"There are those who wage war precisely so that there is no room to control the plundering of wealth," he pointed out, noting that populations are also harmed.
The PR also said that wildlife is threatened by climate change, of which Mozambique has been a victim in recent years.
"Idai was a problem. Then Kenneth. And then Freddy came along. Freddy was completely weird, he's a coward," he said.
Nyusi added that around one million plants and animals are in danger of extinction due to climate change.
"Although the world currently has the knowledge, in some cases the means, to deal with accelerated climate change, the loss of biodiversity and its negative impacts often come in cascades," he said. (Source: RM)
