The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, acknowledged, without specifying the reasons, that the social reintegration of the Renamo guerrillas has been "complex", despite making progress.
Speaking last Friday (04), on the occasion of Peace Day, which marked the end of the 16-year war between Renamo and the government/Frelimo, Nyusi pointed out, however, that the implementation of the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement was a success.
"Reintegration is a process that continues to prove complex," said Nyusi, in a publication by the Savannah newspaper.
"We are pleased to say that by September 30, of the 5,221 cases (of pensions for Renamo guerrillas), 4,215 had been received by the Ministry of Combatants, with 4,161 having been sent to the National Social Welfare Institute, of which 4,140 resulted in pensions being set, 3,930 were approved by the Administrative Court and 1,908 are being paid," he said.
The Mozambican statesman also added that other processes for fixing the pensions of former Renamo guerrillas are being regularized, through a process that involves contacts with the leadership of the main opposition party.
On the occasion, Nyusi, after laying a wreath in Heroes' Square in Maputo, proposed the creation of a peace and national reconciliation commission to improve the model used in the country.
"We can draw inspiration from models developed in other countries, we can draw on the experience of creating a peace and reconciliation commission," said Nyusi, admitting that the peace model needs to be perfected and, although the GPA has resulted in gains, the country has known "incidents of political and military tensions, especially during the post-election periods".
