The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, says that the signing of the General Peace Agreement (GPA) has made Mozambique a regional, continental and world reference for the transition from war to democracy, an act that is consolidated with the active participation of all citizens.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking this Wednesday in Maputo on the occasion of the 31st anniversary of the signing of the General Peace Agreement.
According to the Head of State, since this agreement was signed on October 4, 1992, the country has established itself as a democratic, inclusive and socially just society.
"Since then, Mozambique has become, in the region, on the continent, and in the world, a benchmark for the transition from war to a democracy that is gradually being consolidated through the active participation of its citizens," said Nyusi, quoted by AIM.
Filipe Nyusi also said that the adverse phenomena that Mozambique has suffered, including terrorism and natural disasters, have not turned Mozambicans into a people of lamentation.
Added to this is the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) process, which, for Nyusi, was also a sample of a long process of dialogue that the country has embraced as the only effective way to achieve peace.
He added that the achievement of peace in Mozambique, through the DDR, is a source of pride for the country and "is also important for the wider region and for Africa's efforts to silence the armed forces on the continent".
Because building peace is not just about the absence of weapons, but also includes guaranteeing a "better and sustainable" life, the Head of State said that this was why the government decided to pay pensions to the guerrillas of Renamo, the second largest political force in Mozambique.
"Of the 5,221 guerrillas covered so far, 1,756 cases have been formed, of which 440 have been duly instructed, 316 pensions have been fixed, 251 have received administrative approval and, of these, 27 beneficiaries already received their pensions last September," he said.
