FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested automatic defeat for soccer teams whose fans use racist insults against their opponents.
Infantino's proposal was shared in a statement this Sunday on FIFA's official account on the X platform.
"We must implement [a system] of automatic defeat for teams whose supporters commit [acts of] racism and cause matches to be interrupted, as well as a worldwide stadium ban and criminal charges for racists," Infantino's statement read.
The most recent episode took place this Saturday during Udinese's Serie A match with AC Milan (2-3). The match in Udine, Italy, was briefly suspended due to alleged racist chants by the home fans against French goalkeeper Mike Maignan at the Stadio Friuli. The situation led to Mike Maignan, who was born in French Guiana, and several AC Milan players leaving the pitch in the 34th minute.
Last Wednesday, Convetry City's Anglo-Jamaican player Kasey Palmer was also the target of racist insults and gestures during an English second division match against Sheffield Wednesday.
The FIFA leader reiterated that "the events that took place in Udine and Sheffield on Saturday are totally abhorrent and completely unacceptable". "There is no place for racism or any form of discrimination - both in soccer and in society," he stressed.
The Italian Football Federation is expected to rule tomorrow on the sanction imposed on Udinese, which could range from a fine to a suspension from the stadium for one or more matches.
The case has been referred to the police and the courts. In the UK, the authorities are also investigating racist abuse against Kasey Palmer.
