The CEO of Daimler (DAIGn.DE), Ola Kallenius, said last Friday that a shortage of chips for the production of electric cars is creating delays. Customers who have ordered cars are facing more than a year's wait.
"The demand is huge at Mercedes-Benz and at the same time there are severe limitations. For certain models, the lead time will be longer, in some cases more than a year," the CEO advanced, quoted by Reuters.
The vehicles most dependent on the chips are traditionally the most complex, with the most equipment, and typically the most expensive. With this, a larger hole is expected in the brand's accounts. In addition, electric vehicles from Mercedes will be among those most affected by the delays, since they will be the ones that use the most sophisticated chips.
Kaellenius repeated an earlier prediction that problems with chip supply would continue into 2023. This is also because structural problems and pandemic-induced blockages in the main supply countries persist.
Despite this the other streetcar manufacturers hope to see the semiconductor problems solved by the end of next year.
