Sexual exploitation: Authorities rescue six Vietnamese in Maputo

Exploração sexual: Autoridades resgatam seis vietnamitas em Maputo

Six Vietnamese nationals aged between 25 and 35, trafficked for sexual exploitation, were rescued last night by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).

The victims were rescued from captivity on Avenida Filipe Samuel Magaia in Maputo city, according to "Notícias".

During the operation, three suspects, two men and a woman of the same nationality, were arrested and charged with involvement in the crime.

At the time, the spokesman for SERNIC in Maputo city, João Adriano, said that the accused had lured the victims with false promises of jobs in Mozambique, facilitating their entry into the country with tourist visas.

However, when they arrived in the country, the women were stripped of their passports and other identification documents and held captive.

The spokesman explained that the network was dismantled following a tip-off from one of the victims, who contacted the police.

"The documentation analyzed indicates that one group arrived in the country in 2023 and another in the first months of 2024. This information was obtained with the collaboration of one of the victims, whose complaint made it possible to start the operative action," he said.

SERNIC is investigating the conditions under which the accused gained access to the two residences used as brothels.

"The investigations also point to the use of psychoactive substances as a way of controlling the victims. We are checking for rental contracts, the involvement of accomplices, including nationals," he concluded, quoted by the newspaper.
