The Center for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) says that more than a hundred inmates who were recaptured after the mass escape from the Central Prison and the Maximum Security Prison (B.O) on December 25, 2024, were executed.

According to the Non-Governmental Organization, the information comes from internal sources that differ from the information provided by the Commander General of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique. Official information on the escape points to the deaths of 33 inmates.

"Some of these people were buried in mass graves. This means that, to this day, the prisoners murdered by the security forces are just numbers," writes the CDD.

The organization reports that the prisoners were recaptured by security forces, including the Special Operations Group (GOE), the military, the Rapid Intervention Unit and the Protection Police.

"After their recapture, these prisoners were taken to a room inside the penitentiary. It was at this point, between the night of December 25 and the early hours of December 26, that the massacre began. Just over 100 recaptured prisoners were executed by the GOE and the UIR, inside the penitentiary itself," writes the CDD.

The total number of confirmed deaths exceeds 130 prisoners, highlighting the brutality and seriousness of the actions undertaken by the security forces.

In your Human Rights BulletinOn the other hand, the NGO notes that the families of some citizens who were already in prison at the time of the mass escape still have no information about the situation of their relatives.

"There are families who still don't know if their relatives are alive or not... they have no information about relatives who were in prison," writes the CDD.

The day after the evasion, some families tried to visit their relatives and deliver meals, but were told to go to Maputo Central Hospital (HCM).

"There, some found their injured relatives, while others were directed to the morgue, where many bodies remained unidentified," the non-governmental organization said.
